Introduction: Nepal is a rheumatic heart disease (RHD) endemic country.  From the literature review, RHD prevalence ranged from as low as 1.1 per 1000 in urban areas and as high as around 7 per 1000 in rural areas of Nepal.  RHD is considered to be disease of poverty and illiteracy as it is widely spread among the poor people who are devoid of proper education about RHD.  Through awareness generation, this disease can be minimized to its limit.  So, RHD prevention efforts need to be promoted at all levels.  Promoting awareness about sore throat, RHD, and relation among them with a focus on the importance of treating sore throat for RHD prevention (Primary prevention) at secondary school level would help reduce the incidence of RHD among school going children.  It will be useful to include a section on Health education curriculum at the school level.  The awareness among the parents and common people is low regarding the link of sore throat and RHD.  The school teachers who teach health education are also unaware of this issue.  For RHD prevention, it is very important to raise awareness on sore throat and RHD among school children and teachers.

 

 

Objective: To educate school age children on Rheumatic heart disease and to raise awareness of the disease in this population group

 

Methods/Materials:  A two-day event was held in two different schools with various students.  Students will be given a pre-survey form to test their knowledge on RHD, followed by a class on RHD by RHD educator along with a showing video regarding the RHD developed by WHF.  After that, T-shirts with message regarding prevention of RHD were distributed along with dissemination coloring booklet on RHD and coloring pencils to the students will be carried out.  Students are asked to take that booklet to home and share a message of booklet with their guardians.  At the end of the program, a post-survey is done among the students to evaluate the impact of program on the students' knowledge.
