Nepal Heart Network (NHN)

A network of heart Related Organizations in Nepal

 

INTRODUCTION:

Heart disease is the major killer worldwide. The statistics revealed by the World Heart Federation in 2014 stated that around 17 million people die every year from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the world. CVDs have become diseases of people; rich and poor, young and old, urban and rural, and men and women in the developing countries like Nepal and elsewhere.

The non-governmental sector is actively engaged in Nepal to serve the general public in the areas of heart diseases since 1975. Mrigendra Samjhana Medical Trust followed by Nepal Heart Foundation (NHF), Heart Club Nepal, Jayanti Memorial Trust and in later years, the heart to heart Nepal, Norvic International Hospital, Medicare national Hospital and others notably contributed in the areas of prevention, curative, rehabilitation and other forms of direct support to heart patients. Under initiative of the front runner organization, NHF, which has the largest coverage to several districts in the country, a group of like-minded active organizations decided to join hands for common cause and established the NHN in 27 August 2005. The membership of this network is extended to government entities and related sectors like diabetes, etc.

VISION:

A fore runner platform to advocate the need of joint efforts in prevention and control of heart diseases in Nepal.

 

BROAD AREAS OF WORK:

  1. To extend mutual cooperation and sharing among member organizations in areas of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of CVDs.

  2. Facilitate enhancing to improve performance of member organizations to conceptualize, design and implement programmes in areas of heart and related diseases.

  3. Engage in activities that will complement, not duplicate to its member’s efforts in the related areas.

  4. Advocate for effective implementation of Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) policy.

  5. Coordinate with the member organizations to conduct survey, compile data, and share information and experiences on CVDs.

 

ACTIVITIES:

  1. Increase cooperation among the heart   related NGOs, private sector and other service providing institutions including the Department of Health Services and Ministry of Health and Ministry of Health & Population for  promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of CVDs

  2. Advocacy at different levels to prepare and implement preventive programs by creating a unit of NCFs at the Department of Health Services exclusively for prevention and control of NCDs.

  3. Mobilizing hospitals and Health clinics dealing with heart diseases to create a separate cell or staff for counseling the heart patients regarding primary and secondary preventions.

  4. Encouraging health institutions like medical collages, health schools, nursing schools to include practical aspect regarding prevention and control of heart diseases.

  5. Motivating NGOs having infrastructure in various districts to assist in creating awareness in heart diseases.

  6. Harnessing support of INGOs and bilateral donors to support the heart related programs.

  7. Request and ensure a share from the tax raised from the tobacco and alcohol industries for the purposes of CVD Prevention.

  8. Extending innovative programs such as, one door policy to support the heart patients; awareness raising programs, publications, training for human resources development ; etc

  9. Coordinating programs in other areas of mutual interest of number organizations.

 

THE COORDINATOR OF NHN, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The coordinator’s position is rotated among the members of NHN every year following the alphabetical order and handed over during the annual general meeting of the Network. The Coordinator is responsible to lead, manage and steer the functions of the Network.

MEMBERSHIP

The non-political organization registered and timely renewed following existing Government regulations and working within the territory of Nepal for at least a year in the heart related area or with one or more objectives related to CVDs can be a member of this network. The founding members and others branch or district level offices of existing member organizations having flexibility to take independent decisions are also eligible to be the member of this network.
